The Historic Elsinore Theatre hosts a fancy footwork fundraiser as Dancing with the Salem Stars returns for the fourth year on May 13.
Six Salem stars, each paired with a professional partner from Corvallis-based Utah Ballroom Dance Company and given less than one week to learn a ballroom dance routine, will strut their stuff. This year’s stars include attorney Christopher Casebeer who will swing to “Rock Around the Clock,” philanthropist Deana Freres performing the cha cha to “Shook Me All Night Long,” Realtor Dewey Whitton doing Nightclub 2-step to “The Rose,” teacher and coach Shawn Stanley foxtrotting to “Come Fly With Me” and husband and wife, yogi and former derby girl Leslie Venti performing the polka to “Yakety Yak” and restaurateur Dino Venti who will tango to “Die Another Day.” The annual ballroom competition isn’t as much about the dancing prowess, although that does play a role, as it is about personality and panache.
Three local celebrity judges will offer their critique, while Al Davidson emcees. At intermission, the audience will have the opportunity to vote on whom they think deserves to win the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy. Following the stars’ performance, the Utah Ballroom Dance Company will perform excerpts from their award-winning showcase “Ballroom Fever.”
